What Is Procalamine?

ProcalAmine (3% amino acid and 3% glycerin) is a source of amino acids and energy used to help maintain and improve the balance of body protein in patients who require a nutritional supplement for a short period of time.

What Are Side Effects of Procalamine?

Common side effects of ProcalAmine include:

  • nausea,
  • fever,
  • flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling),
  • irritation,
  • inflammation of leg or arm veins,
  • and
  • thrombosis (blood clots) of the infusion site

Dosage for Procalamine

The recommended dosage for ProcalAmine is approximately 3 liters per day.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Procalamine?

ProcalAmine may interact with barbiturates, narcotics, hypnotics or systemic anesthetics. ProcalAmine contains a sulfite that may cause allergic reactions in patients with asthma. Tell your doctor all medications you use.

Procalamine During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant you should only take ProcalAmine if clearly necessary. Caution should be taken if you are breastfeeding and taking ProcalAmine.

SIDE EFFECTS: Flushing, nausea, warm sensation or mild redness/irritation at the IV infusion site may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

It is important to keep your IV site clean. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice: any signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills), unusual redness, swelling, or severe pain at the IV site.

Although unlikely to occur, you may develop an imbalance of body fluid, minerals, or nutrients while receiving this medication. Your therapy may need to be changed to correct the imbalance. It is important to keep your medical and laboratory appointments for regular monitoring by your healthcare professional. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: change in the amount of urine, increased thirst/urination, mental/mood changes, muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat, swelling of hands/feet/ankles.

A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), dizziness, trouble breathing.

Local reactions of the infusion site consisting of a warm sensation, erythema, phlebitis and thrombosis have been reported in the literature with peripheral amino acid infusions. Generalized flushing, fever and nausea have been reported in the literature during the peripheral administration of amino acids.
