What Is Amiloride Hydrochloride?
Amiloride hydrochloride is a diuretic (water pill) used to treat congestive heart failure, high blood pressure (hypertension), and other conditions such as low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia).
What Are Side Effects of Amiloride Hydrochloride?
Common side effects of amiloride hydrochloride include:
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- stomach or abdominal pain,
- loss of appetite,
- gas,
- diarrhea,
- headache,
- dizziness,
- skin rash,
- weakness,
- fatigue,
- constipation,
- muscle cramps,
- dizziness,
- cough,
- shortness of breath, and
- impotence.
Dosage for Amiloride Hydrochloride
The recommended dosage of Amiloride Hydrochloride is one 5 mg tablet daily. The dosage may be increased to 10 mg per day, if necessary. Amiloride Hydrochloride may cause high potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia).
What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Amiloride Hydrochloride?
Amiloride Hydrochloride may interact with tacrolimus, cyclosporine, lithium, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or other diuretics. Tell your doctor all medications you use.
Amiloride Hydrochloride During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding
Amiloride should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Consult your doctor before using Amiloride Hydrochloride if you are breastfeeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop taking amiloride and call your doctor at once if you have:
- increased thirst, decreased urination;
- heavy sweating, or hot and dry skin;
- tremors, confusion, loss of consciousness;
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
- high potassium--tiredness, numbness or tingling, slow or unusual heart rate, muscle weakness or limp feeling; or
- low levels of sodium in the body--headache, confusion, slurred speech, severe weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady.
Common side effects may include:
- nausea, stomach pain, gas, loss of appetite;
- headache; or
- rash.

SIDE EFFECTS
Amiloride HCl is usually well tolerated and, except for hyperkalemia (serum potassium levels greater than 5.5 mEq liter - see WARNINGS), significant adverse effects have been reported infrequently. Minor adverse reactions were reported relatively frequently (about 20%) but the relationship of many of the reports to amiloride HCl is uncertain and the overall frequency was similar in hydrochlorothiazide treated groups. Nausea/anorexia, abdominal pain, flatulence, and mild skin rash have been reported and probably are related to amiloride. Other adverse experiences that have been reported with amiloride are generally those known to be associated with diuresis, or with the underlying disease being treated.
The adverse reactions for amiloride HCl listed in the following table have been arranged into two groups: (1) incidence greater than one percent; and (2) incidence one percent or less. The incidence for group (1) was determined from clinical studies conducted in the United States (837 patients treated with amiloride HCl). The adverse effects listed in group (2) include reports from the same clinical studies and voluntary reports since marketing. The probability of a causal relationship exists between amiloride HCl and these adverse reactions, some of which have been reported only rarely.

Causal Relationship Unknown
Other reactions have been reported but occurred under circumstances where a causal relationship could not be established. However, in these rarely reported events, that possibility cannot be excluded. Therefore, these observations are listed to serve as alerting information to physicians.
