AK-Pentolate Side Effects Center

AK-Pentolate (cyclopentolate hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) is an anticholinergicused to dilated the pupils (to produce mydriasis and cycloplegia). Common side effects of AK-Pentolate include:

Instill a dose of one or two drops of 1% or 2% AK-Pentolate solution in the eye, which may be repeated in five to ten minutes if necessary. AK-Pentolate may interact with carbachol, pilocarpine, or ophthalmic cholinesterase inhibitors. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using AK-Pentolate; it is unknown how it would affect a fetus. It is unknown if AK-Pentolate passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

AK-Pentolate Consumer Information

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Tell your caregivers right away if you have:

  • blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;
  • severe burning or redness of your eyes;
  • drowsiness;
  • constipation, little or no urinating;
  • dry mouth or nose, decreased sweating;
  • fast heartbeats; or
  • fever, skin rash, flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling).

Infants and young children may be more likely to have side effects from cyclopentolate ophthalmic. For at least 30 minutes after the child has been treated with this medicine, watch for the following side effects:

  • loss of coordination;
  • unusual changes in behavior;
  • feeling restless or excited;
  • confusion, speech problems; or
  • feeding problems, stomach bloating.

Common side effects may include:

  • blurred vision;
  • mild eye irritation or redness;
  • puffy eyelids; or
  • the eyes being more sensitive to light.

SIDE EFFECTS

Ocular

Increased intraocular pressure, burning, photophobia, blurred vision, irritation, hyperemia, conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, punctate keratitis, synechiae have been reported.

Non-Ocular

Use of cyclopentolate has been associated with psychotic reactions and behavioral disturbances, usually in children, especially with 2% concentration. These disturbances include ataxia, incoherent speech, restlessness, hallucinations, hyperactivity, seizures, disorientation as to time and place, and failure to recognize people. This drug produces reactions similar to those of other anticholinergic drugs, but the central nervous system manifestations as noted above are more common. Other manifestations of anticholinergic drugs are skin rash, abdominal distention in infants, unusual drowsiness, tachycardia, hyperpyrexia, vasodilation, urinary retention, diminished gastrointestinal motility and decreased secretion in salivary and sweat glands, pharynx, bronchi and nasal passages. Severe manifestations of toxicity include coma, medullary paralysis and death.
