Are Ibsrela and Motegrity the Same Thing?

Ibsrela (tenapanor) and Motegrity (prucalopride) are used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults.

Ibsrela and Motegrity belong to different drug classes. Ibsrela is a sodium/hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) inhibitor and Motegrity is a serotonin-4 (5-HT4) receptor agonist.

Side effects of Ibsrela and Motegrity that are similar include diarrhea, abdominal distension bloating, gas (flatulence), and dizziness.

Side effects of Motegrity that are different from Ibsrela include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

Ibsrela may interact with other drugs.

Motegrity may also interact with erythromycin or ketoconazole.

Ibsrela may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Ibsrela; maternal use is not expected to result in fetal exposure to the drug. It is unknown if Ibsrela passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

What Drugs Interact With Motegrity?

Motegrity may interact with erythromycin or ketoconazole. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Motegrity; it is unknown how it would affect a fetus. Motegrity passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

 

How Should Ibsrela Be Taken?

The recommended dosage of Ibsrela in adults is 50 mg, orally twice daily.

How Should Motegrity Be Taken?

The recommended dose of Motegrity is 2 mg once daily.
