Definition of Syrinx

Syrinx: a fluid-filled cavity located within the spinal cord (syringomyelia) or brain stem (syringobulbia). A syrinx usually is associated with conditions that interrupt the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). They are most common in people with congenital abnormalities (birth defects) of the junction of the skull and spine. Symptoms include weakness of the hands and arms, and problems with pain and temperature sensation in the back and neck.
