Mosquito bites driving you crazy? Here are 4 of the best natural mosquito repellents, and other ways you can stop mosquitoes from biting you

When you want to venture outside in the warmer months, mosquitoes can be a real mood dampener. And while there are synthetic mosquito repellents like DEET spray, here are 4 natural options that can help you stop mosquitoes from biting you:

  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE): A plant-based oil, OLE is effective at preventing mosquito bites similar to products that contain lower concentrations of DEET. Repellents containing OLE or para-Menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) may provide up to 2 hours of protection, while pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil can provide 100% protection against mosquitoes for up to 12 hours. OLE and OLE-based insect repellents are not safe for children under the age of 3.
  • Catnip oil: This insect repellent is derived from the Nepeta cataria plant, which is an herb known for attracting cats. It may protect from mosquitoes for 7 hours, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • Cinnamon oil: Cinnamon is also a natural mosquito repellant, although the oil should be diluted with water before spraying on skin and clothes. A concentrated dose of the oil can irritate the skin.
  • Lemongrass oil: According to a study published in July 2016 in the World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, lemongrass oil can be as effective as commercial mosquito repellents.

Other natural ingredients that have been traditionally used as natural mosquito repellants, and currently being studied to establish their safety and efficacy, include:

  • Neem oil
  • Thyme
  • Clove oil
  • Fennel
  • Celery extract

Since some oils can cause allergic reactions or sensitivity, it’s best to do a patch test first by applying a few drops on the inner side of your elbow.

How to prevent mosquito bites

Aside from using natural ingredients to repel mosquitoes, here are a few other steps that can help prevent mosquitoes from biting you:

  • Cover up. Protect yourself from mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved shirts or tops, long socks, and shoes.
  • Use fans. Fast-moving air can hinder mosquitoes from landing on your body. Bring an electric fan with you when you sit outside.
  • Get rid of standing water. Standing water around your home provides a good breeding place for mosquitoes. Follow these tips for preventing mosquitoes from multiplying:
    • Unclog roof gutters.
    • Keep your swimming pool circulated and treated.
    • Change the water in bird baths at least once a week.
    • Dump water that may have accumulated on trash can lids.
    • Check for water collected in empty flower pots and drain them.
