Paresis

Paresis

Paresis denotes a weakness which is less than total paralysis (-plegia), which may be of upper or lower motor neurone origin. Various prefixes denote the location of such weakness, e.g., hemiparesis, monoparesis, ophthalmoparesis, paraparesis, quadriparesis (q.v.).
Since localized pain may inhibit voluntary muscular exertion, apparent weakness in such circumstances may be labeled "algesic pseudoparesis."
